- Within the Lega, the Bwami society is opened to men and women, organizedĀ social and political life. There were up to seven levelsĀ of Initiation, each associated with Emblems.Ā
- Following their exodus from Uganda during the 16th century,Ā the Lega settled on the west bankĀ of the Lualaba River, DRC. Also calledĀ Warega, these individuals live in villagesĀ autonomously surrounded by palisades, usuallyĀ on top of hills.
- The role of the Chief, Kindi, isĀ held by the oldest man of the Clan, who must beĀ the highest ranking officer. As in other tribesĀ of the forest, men hunt and clearĀ while women grow cassava. TheĀ social recognition and authority had toĀ in addition to being earned individually: the chiefĀ owed his selection to his heart (mutima), a goodĀ character, intelligence, and behaviorĀ in flawless condition. During ritual ceremonies,Ā Idumu masks were presented to insidersĀ placed on a barrier and surrounded by masksĀ smaller in size.
